The Pros & Cons of Online Classes
The widespread outbreak of Covid-19 had led the students and lecturers of all the educational institutes such as kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, universities, colleges and coaching classes to move towards online teaching and learning classes. Although these classes are able to mitigate the loss of studies to some extent, they have imposed some major concerns as well. As with most teaching methods, online learning has its own set of pros and cons. Decoding and understanding these will help institutes in creating strategies for effective online education and uninterrupted learning journey for students.
A few advantages of the online classes are that anyone from any part of the world could attend the classes regardless of the travelling issues. It has eliminated the cost and time to reach the school or college and prevented the loss of studies especially during these times even though movement control order (MCO) has been imposed. Furthermore, students tend to have improved virtual communication and collaboration. Online classes also tend to give students a broader and global perspective as well as refined critical and technical skill. Besides that, online learning has added flexibility to the time schedule and studying environment. It also demonstrates self-motivation as you are expected to be independent and learn on their own to engage with the material that you are learning. It also allows you to be more independent.
On the other hand, one of the biggest problems is technology issues like internet connectivity is not proper in so many areas. So, students are not able to connect to classes. Another major problem is that lack of one to one teaching, due to it students find it very difficult to ask questions if they have any doubt in the learning process. Also, the overuse of electronic devices for studies has resulted in various health issues as it is not advisable to look at the computer screen for more than 20 minutes and students tend to have difficulty in managing screen time. At the same time, online classes require good time-management skills and may create a sense of isolation. There will also be lack of social interaction among friends and also with the lecturers in online classes. Some students may also experience difficulty concentration or staying focused while at home.
Online learning is a growing and exciting new way to learn about something. Today’s online learning opportunities offer starts from learning one-hour live workshops to even online degrees. Online classes are quite different from learning in a face to face setting, most of the students and lecturers have started adapting themselves to it and became more comfortable with this learning set up. In present, both teachers and students have adopted this new model of education and are trying to get used to it with each passing day. If we can try to resolve the problems stated above that are related to online classes, it will be a big revolution in the upcoming years.
