Christmas, romance & Emilia Clarke’s infectious smile 😀 what more would you need to make your holidays all sappy, cute and comforting? The movie is set in the alleys of London – a welcome escape in case you have the travel bug but MCO’s put a wrench in your plans. For those of us who are a little more alone this Christmas, this movie might just make you feel a little less so 🙂

This amazingly animated movie presents a unique take on the origin of St. Nick, commonly known as Santa Claus, capturing the true spirit of Christmas; peace, joy and love. The only flaw of this 97 minutes long movie is that it leaves you longing to know more about the characters’ backstories.

Everybody needs some cheesy christmas romance especially in these times! This movie stars Vanessa Hudgens who played 2 characters. This movie is about how both the characters found their true love through a baking competition.

One of my favourite Satoshi Kon movies which is loosely based on Peter B. Kyne’s novel Three Godfathers. Follow the misadventures of three homeless people living on the streets of Tokyo, when they discover a newborn baby among the trash on Christmas Eve and set out to look for its parents. This movie’s got a good mix of humour, heart-feels and high-speed action! The beautiful storytelling centred on the importance of family, unique visuals and distinct character designs just makes it all the more enjoyable.

A great movie to feel melancholic and found. A movie that features emotions surrounding disconnection and alienation, where two people facing similar isolation, find each other and share their troubles. Set in Tokyo, the journey between the two around the culture shock of Japan and the uncertainty of the future will leave you feeling relatable to their struggles and yearning for an organic friendship such as theirs. This movie also goes to show that, when two people are meant to meet, it does not matter where, when or who, but somehow they are exactly what they need.

This classic Studio Ghibli production follows the story of young Sophie who was cursed to take the form of an old hag after she offended a witch. Follow the journey of the courageous and strong-hearted Sophie who’s keen on changing herself back to normal, encountering a moving castle owned by a sorcerer who goes by multiple names, Howl, Pendragon and Jenkin along her way. The message that Hayao Miyazaki wished to convey through the movie was that “Life was worth living, and nothing will change that.”

To sum it up, this movie is full of magic, war, love and kindness that is portrayed by each and every character which makes this movie one of my top favourites.

The story was attention-grabbing right from the start with the accidental encounter of An Sheng with Su Jia Ming, an old flame on the subway whom she coldly responds to. She further discovered from him that her childhood best friend, Qi Yue whom she had fallen out with, published a best-selling novel about their friendship online. “The first time I met An Sheng was when I was thirteen”, An Sheng reads the first sentence of the novel with an indifferent cold gaze. She had once believed that their friendship was indestructible, until Su Jia Ming came along. What happened between the three of them? Be sure to watch the movie to find out! The twists and turns along the way as the story unfolds will definitely leave you awe-struck.

On the night of Christmas Eve, a boy starts to become skeptical of the existence of Santa Claus. Struggling to fall asleep, he witnesses a steam locomotive arrive on the street, and goes outside to examine it. The conductor introduces the train as the Polar Express, which was on its way to the North Pole. Initially reluctant, the boy jumps aboard and joins several other children as they embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus preparing for Christmas. The Santa selects him to receive the first gift of Christmas, he decided to keep the bell that flies loose from the galloping reindeer’s reins, but he lost the bell through the hole in his pocket. He returns home and awakens on Christmas morning to find a present containing his lost bell. However, despite his now old age, the bell still rings for him, as it does “for all who truly believe”.

The best part of this movie is the fact that it leaves you with a bittersweet feeling at the end of it which is not often felt. The story revolves around how two individuals with totally different personalities who are  facing personal life struggles hate each other in the beginning but eventually finds comfort in each other’s company and fall in love. If you’re someone who gravitates to movies with twists and turns, this one’s for you!
